I’ve written before on this blog about how different dentists define success. With Labor Day coming up, this seems like a good time to revisit that topic.
Before defining different ways to succeed, let me ask this: are you happy? Are the hours that you put in treating patients, doing follow-ups, and managing the various aspects of your practice fulfilling? Is your staff enthusiastic and energetic? Are you comfortable financially? Do you see good growth prospects for your practice?
If so, congratulations. In my book, you’re eminently successful.
Or, are there too many days when it all feels like a never-ending treadmill? Like you’re running as fast as you can but not getting anywhere? Do you feel like things slipping away from you? Do you question whether you’ve done and are doing the right things to grow your business?
If those are true, then I don’t think you’ve reached success yet, regardless of your billings.
You can have an adequate but relatively modest income and feel fulfilled. You can have tremendous billings and feel unfulfilled.
I think what defines the successful dentist is that he or she works smarter, not harder. And when it comes to marketing your practice, smarter is definitely the way to go. Working smarter means that you focus your efforts on attracting the right kinds of patients, the ones that allow you to handle the cases you love and give a really nice bump to your billings.
You can drill and fill until you retire. If that’s what you look forward to, then you’ll be successful – assuming that you can compete successfully for new patients in an increasingly crowded marketplace.
If that’s not your idea of success, do yourself a favor and learn how dentists can attract new and better patients.
