Director of Special Projects
“Matt Tungate calls me, ‘McGregor,’” Alex says, shaking his head. “I have no idea why. But I don’t hold it against him; in fact, I’m very proud of Matt for finally trying sushi. Of course, Matt and I have our other ‘moments’ – one of my partial hobbies is fostering and growing Matt Tungate’s fear of flying. I’ve never seen a grown man cry so much in an airplane.”
Our Director of Special Projects designs and tests new creative initiatives for SmartBox. And he creates The Patient Attraction Magazine®, our visually stunning, information-packed monthly publication.
“I think my strengths lie in my creativity and my vision for future projects,” he says. “I believe that preparation and study help jumpstart creative endeavors, so I’m always learning. I enjoy photography and learning as much as I possibly can about things that interest me.”
Alex holds a bachelor’s degree in electronic media production from Morehead State University, where he was named Outstanding Student in that field of study.
Alex was the third SmartBox full-time employee, joining the company in January 2014. So, he not only knows where the bodies are buried, he knows how to make them look great.
“I enjoy the camaraderie and collaboration at SmartBox,” he says. “In some ways, what we’re doing is completely new. My work doesn’t involve reinventing the wheel so much as thinking outside the box and the wheel.”
Raised on a farm, Alex conjoined his wanderlust and his career. Prior to joining SmartBox, he developed and executed projects for major brands, including Nestlé and Meijer. His work has taken him to Europe as well as North America. “I love traveling as much as I can,” he says. “I think I’ve spent time in at least every major airport in the country. There should be a merit badge for that.”
It’s fair to say that Alex is always moving forward, whether in what he does professionally or with himself. “I am passionate about improving myself. Whether that’s in the gym working out or at work in my creative work, I keep pushing limits. And I am passionate about SmartBox and its growth and improvement. Even though the quality of our dentists’ videos is something that other dentists can only dream about, I’m constantly trying to find new ways to accent stories through lighting, composition, and camera work.”
When not pushing the limits at work, Alex and his family push them in other ways. “I love going to Broadway shows with my family; we seem to know every song in every show. I’m sure that’s lovely for those seated around us in the balcony. I am a lover of all things food and right now I’m dating a chef, which helps – she keeps me fat. In fact, I used to work for a food show before SmartBox; the weirder the food, the better.”
Anyway, that’s Alex’s world. Maybe that should be the title of his next indie project: “Alex’s World.” He can definitely play himself, but we’ll see if Dana Carvey is available.
