Welcome to the third issue of Straight from the ’Box.
We’re heading into summer, so dentists everywhere are bracing for the “pre-vacation” cleanings and examinations. Those seemingly routine appointments are a potential gold mine for dentists, and you’ll find tips in this issue to help you convert one-offs to ongoing profit for your practice.
Speaking of profit, SmartBox has a new product that will “Shock and Awe” your dental implant prospects. You’ll see why patients that receive these materials before their first appointments results in them arriving presold!
In the internet environment, things are tightening down. Learn why your website’s loading speed is becoming more crucial than ever, and why it’s essential to move to a secure platform if you haven’t already.
As we move toward the halfway point of the year, the SmartBox Challenge continues. While it’s too soon to analyze the Q2 data, there are indications that the race is heating up. Now more than ever, it’s important to answer every call and appoint every possible new patient caller.
Thanks for reading Straight from the ’Box. As always, we’ll keep you posted.
The SmartBox Challenge
The SmartBox Challenge
We published the Q1 leader standings for the SmartBox Challenge in the last issue. A number of dentists were delighted, while many of the practices that weren’t among the leaders have redoubled their efforts to appoint more new patients.
It’s still early in the race for the fabulous grand prizes. If your practice didn’t place in the Q1 standings, no worries – you’re still in the race if you take action beginning now. For busy dentists and their staff, time has a way of slipping past, unnoticed.
Just as a reminder, here’s what’s at stake for 2018’s top-performing practices:
- First Place: a fabulous $10,000 all-inclusive vacation!
- Second Place: a $5,000 getaway to Las Vegas!
- Third Place: a $2,000 spa package!
You and your staff work hard all year. By consistently supporting your team’s efforts to appoint as many new patients as possible, they’ll earn their own reward at no cost whatsoever to you!
If you have any concerns about your Q1 new patient numbers, have a talk with your CSM.

SmartBox Helps Your Implant Consults Arrive Pre-Qualified
At SmartBox, we know that almost every dentist dislikes the “selling” part of dentistry. That’s why we’ve created a product that will predispose, if not outright convince, your implant prospects to trust you even before their first appointment – the SmartBox Shock & Awe Package!
Let’s face it – implants are a large financial investment for almost everyone. The typical pattern is for you to do your examination and preliminary imaging, lay out your case solution, answer a boatload of questions, and then hear, “Let me think about it.”
You never hear back from most of those prospects.
That rarely happens when your prospects receive the Shock & Awe Package before their first appointment. Thanks to the extensive and thorough materials in the package, their questions are answered, and the value of the investment is confirmed before they ever see you!
SmartBox’s Shock & Awe Package contains:
- An introduction letter
- Your bio
- A personal “handwritten” letter
- A short book about implants carrying your name
- A step-by-step implant coupon book
- A template for your practice’s application and dental health form
- Directions to your practice
You CAN Move to an Implant Practice
In conjunction with Dr. Ron Receveur of New Albany Implants, SmartBox is hosting a series of Dental Practice Transformation Seminars. Dr. Ron forged his own path from being a general dentist to becoming the destination implant specialist in the Midwest!
When you attend the Dental Practice Transformation Seminar, you’ll learn exactly how Dr. Ron did it, and how to avoid the many mistakes he made along the way.
The Google Speed Update
Google announced in January 2018 that mobile website page loading speed would become a ranking factor those sites. Google has long considered page loading speed as a ranking factor for desktop search, but it finally has enough data to implement standards for mobile websites. The change is scheduled to take effect later this year.
Loading time for desktop and mobile sites are considered separately in page rankings. However, you might recall that searches from mobile devices now outstrip desktop searches by a growing margin. Mobile search is a big deal these days.
Here’s what this change means for dentists: mobile-compatible web pages must load within 3.0 seconds. Obviously, that time is affected by bandwidth network traffic and server location, to some extent.
If you’re concerned about your page loading speed, don’t be. SmartBox uses a content delivery network (CDN) that allows both desktop and mobile sites to load in as little as 1.5 seconds. That far exceeds Google’s requirements.
If you have any questions or concerns about your website’s performance, talk with your CSM.
Turn One-Offs into Gold Mines
The U.S. population remains highly mobile, and tens of millions of people relocate every year. It may be as short a distance as elsewhere in the same county or as far as from one coast to another.
Attrition from patient population due to relocation is a fact of life for dentists. New patient funnels contain two types of prospects – those who are in urgent need of services, and those who are proactive in caring for their oral health.
The second type of patient is a potential gold mine for your practice, and here’s why.
Patients looking for a cleaning, exam, and X-ray are dream patients that will be gold for you in the long run. These patients are concerned about maintaining their dental health and make it a continual priority. They’re also the patients who will opt to get a root canal and a crown immediately when the problem arises.
In contrast, patients who let the problem deteriorate until there’s no choice but to extract often never return to the practice. That forces you to spend more on marketing and advertising to replace them.
Long-term, concerned patients represent value to your practice that is orders of magnitude greater than a simple one-off. It just makes sense to offer them the very best experience possible while they’re in your practice. It’s an investment that can pay off handsomely.
What’s All the Flap About HTTPS?
It’s no secret that online security is becoming a larger and larger concern. Hardly a week goes by without another announcement of a data breach that puts people’s personal information at risk.
Fortunately, you shouldn’t waste a moment worrying that your practice website isn’t secure. SmartBox uses the HTTPS protocol for all our dentists’ websites.
The HTTPS protocol, which uses Secure Socket Layers to encrypt transmissions between an online user and the website, offers a level of protection against having communications intercepted. It’s also required for healthcare websites to meet HIPAA standards. More and more people are beginning to look for the padlock symbol in the address bar or for the HTTPS prefix in the address itself.
Effective July 2018, Google’s Chrome browser will mark non-HTTPS sites as “Not Secure.” This is a big deal – Chrome has a nearly 60% market share among all browsers. Put simply, 6 out of 10 of your prospects likely use Chrome, and seeing a dental website marked “Not Secure” will cause them to look elsewhere for a dentist.
Rest assured that your noncompliant competitors’ websites will take the hit, and more prospects may choose to visit your secure website instead.
Almost all the dentists who contact SmartBox say that they’re drowning in patients. In fact, they describe themselves as practically roller-skating between rooms trying to keep up with a jammed schedule. Some have extended their hours or are even staying open a half day on Saturday trying to meet the demand.
This isn’t the way that dentistry should be – a high-volume, low-case-value proposition that leaves you working too hard, for too long, for too little. That isn’t what SmartBox is all about – Helping Dentists Thrive. Working yourself half to death while not having time or energy for family, friends, and you isn’t thriving.
That’s why we’ve recently shifted our focus from helping our dentists get More and Better Patients to simply Better Patients.
Now, if you’re content with a high-volume practice, more power to you. We’ll help keep your chairs filled.
But if you’d prefer to handle more of the cases you love to do rather than just what walks through the door, we can make that happen. If you’d like to have time and energy outside the practice for actually living, we’ll help you get there.
Talk with your CSM about the higher-value revenue streams you’d like to develop and the cases you truly enjoy handling. That’s how dentistry is supposed to be – relaxed, fulfilling, and rewarding.
